To Win or Not To Win

Ueda Tatsuya is hardly a gamer. But when he does come in contact with a gaming console, he is very competitive.

And that is something that troubles Nakamaru greatly when Ueda drops by his house randomly, gets bored staring at him play video games and insists on joining in.

***

Nakamaru is inclined to believe that ‘not taking a loss easily’ is a common trait shared between KAT-TUN (it is strongly evident in ‘Gakuya no Corner’ anyway). When Ueda slams the console aggressively after his tenth loss, Nakamaru gets a little worried. He can predict that Ueda will begin throwing a fuss pretty soon.

Nakamaru isn’t too far off when Ueda accuses him of cheating after Ueda’s twelfth loss.

I can be a psychic after retiring from showbiz, Nakamaru considers.

“Yuichi, are you listening to me?” Ueda snaps with irritation when Nakamaru doesn’t respond to his allegation. “You’re gloating in that happy bubble from triumphing over me numerous times right?”

Before Nakamaru can do anything to calm Ueda down, Ueda is already out of the door.

At times like this, Nakamaru blames his age for hindering his reaction speed.

Things can get pretty awkward when asking for advice from the rest of KAT-TUN (plus Taguchi can’t keep his loudmouth shut) so Nakamaru turns to a game forum. Not only having the privilege of being anonymous, like-minded people will be able to understand his dilemma much better.

Seihōkei29: My girlfriend gets upset whenever I win her in a video game. It hurts me to see her sour about her loss but being a gamer, I can’t possibly lose on purpose right? Moreover, I’m sure not everyone would like an easy win. What should I do?

Nakamaru swears he deliberated a long time before deciding to type ‘girlfriend’.

***

After finishing his homework, Nakamaru is pleasantly surprised at the long strings of replies posted on his forum thread. Sieving out the unintelligible ones (eg. break up with that cry-baby, offensive remarks etc.), Nakamaru focuses on the remaining three.

w21225y: Bro, losing purposefully is not cool! Where’s your gamer pride?

cscs34: Are you playing games that you’re good at? Why not let her choose instead? Unless she’s the kind that sucks at everything…

Taguchi_Junnosuke: Gamer pride isn’t worth anything at all. Isn’t her smile more valuable than anything?

Although the username of the last member is laughable, Nakamaru decides to heed his advice.

Thankful for his acting classes, Ueda doesn’t suspects a thing when Nakamaru slips up at the crucial moment.

It’s oddly rewarding to see Ueda twirling with excitement and happiness.

“Take that Yuichi! I finally trounced you!”

Besides laughing with delight, Nakamaru can’t think of any other reaction.

That night, Nakamaru sends a private message to ‘Taguchi_Junnosuke’ and thanks him for his advice.

During a group interview, the reporter queries KAT-TUN about an interesting happening recently.

“I offered love advice anonymously on a forum!” Taguchi declared eagerly. “It worked and the person wrote a ‘thank you’ message to me. It feels good knowing that you’re able to help a stranger!”

When Nakamaru gasps and chokes on his water, Ueda throws him a questioning look.

Although chances of Taguchi being ‘Taguchi_Junnosuke’ on a game forum are probably very low, Nakamaru is the kind that likes to clarify suspicion. He reckons his brain might explode if he is to think about it for an entire day.

“You’re an idol,” Nakamaru begins carefully. “Aren’t you afraid of revealing your identity?”

“Just have a clever nickname and they’ll never figure your real identity!”

“And what is your name on the internet?” Koki joins the conversation. “I can’t fathom you thinking of anything that is remotely ‘clever’.”

“That’s hurtful!” Taguchi whines but doesn’t detain Koki from a reply. “I call myself Taguchi_Junnosuke of course! They’ll just think I’m a rabid KAT-TUN fan with such a name. Even if I insist I’m the real deal, nobody believes it.”

When Nakamaru gags on his water for the second time in a day, Nakamaru finds Ueda staring at him with an unreadable expression.

“What forum is that?” Kamenashi pokes his nosy self in and Nakamaru is thankful for that (if he probes any further, it’ll be fishy).

When Taguchi replies with the game forum that Nakamaru frequents, Nakamaru nearly faints from embarrassment. Ueda catches him and expresses concern but Nakamaru lies about ‘insufficient air supply from choking too much on his drink during the interview’.

Ueda pops by Nakamaru’s apartment the next day, bringing his boxing supplies along and demanding Nakamaru to join him in his gym training.

“Why the sudden invitation?” Nakamaru muses as he packs and Ueda sends him a cryptic grin.

“Make a guess~”

“You think I’m getting fat from binging when stressed?”

“Nope.”

“I give up,” Nakamaru sighs after his first guess and goes to fetch a glass of water instead. “What’s the big deal?”

“So I can kick your ass for real, Seihōkei29,” Ueda chuckles. “I asked Taguchi for help and accessed that stupid game forum you visit.”

Nakamaru suffocates on water for the third time in 24-hours.

“And I’ll show you who’s the girl on the boxing ring,” Ueda continues with a smirk.

Nakamaru is pretty sure that he is living his last moments.
